Hokkaido Day 4
Foxes, Fishes, Fantastic Foods

Ended day 4 in Hokkaido, in Kitami. Kitami is interesting - large, flat plains spreading out around it, and it’s known for its Onions. Located near the Sea of Okhotsk, it has a weird weather pattern where it actually gets fairly warm on sunny days, almost reaching above freezing, but then dips into the negatives (Fahrenheit) during the night.
Today I went to Kitakitsune farm and saw the red foxes there - they are so cute! They are curious, and get very close, so it’s important to be careful. While in this Western part of Kitami, I visited @onneyuaqua_official and got to see an amazing diversity of northern aquatic life - pictured here are the turtles from the aquarium. It reminded me a lot of home, and the @seattleaquarium, as I got to see a salmon on display on the opposite side of the Pacific Ocean.
One other thing I noticed when out that far west is that, given the heavy snow-fall, the disabled parking at the information center has sturdy shelter to prevent hazardous parking for Disabled folks.
This may seem mundane, but it is an example of consideration of the way disabilities compound natural barriers and difficulties. Able-bodied people who are walking around on snow and ice, or getting out of their cars, have a higher risk than when it’s not icy to fall or become injured. This is doubly the case for people who have mobility issues that compound difficulty with uneven or hazardous terrain. To prevent this compounding, the simple, natural, and just thing is to produce sturdy and reliable supports. This is the case here, and it was a pleasure to see.
